Technological Innovations and Inventions
This unit is designed to teach students that most inventions and innovations are the result of an evolutionary process and have students understand how a series or refinements leads to an improvement in a technological device; that new technologies create new processes and have students be able to explain how a change in technology would change the process of creating a product; teach the students all the factors that lead to changes in technology; and that research and development is a problem-solving approach used by companies to prepare products and systems for the marketplace.

Unit 1 Lesson 1: Innovation and Invention
Key Concept: Inventions and Innovations are the result of an evolutionary process through a series of improvements and refinements.
Pupose: Unit 1, Lesson 1 exemplifies that most inventions and innovations are the result of an evolutionary process, and how a series of refinements leads to an improvement in a technological device.
Objective: Students will present the evolutionary history of a technological device, specifically mentioning the original inventions and series of refinenemenrts to that incention that led to that given technological device.
Essential Question: What innovations to basic inventions have led to our current 21st century technology?

Unit 1 Lesson 3- The Role of Research and Development: A Problem-Solving Approach
Big Idea: Research and development is a problem-solving approach that allows businesses and industry to prepare products and systems for the marketplace.
Essential Question: How do businesses in the industry utilize research and development as a problem-solving approach?
Lesson Engagement Activity: The students an allotted amount of time to design an innovation idea that solves an everyday need. As students share their ideas, other students offer constructive criticism to suggest upgrades of improvements.
Exploration: Students research to determine whether their idea from the Engagement Activity already exists—and if it does, how it could be modified. If it does not exist, students consider what other information they would need to further develop and sell their product. Students record their research and ideas for modification in their Engineering Design Journals.

Advertising and Marketing
Unit 1 Lesson 2: Advertising and Marketing Effect on Technology
Key Concept: Many factors—including advertising, the strength of the economy, goals of the company, and fads determined by society—have an impact on the demand and design of technology.
Objective: Identify how advertising, the strength of the economy, the goals of the company and the fads of the time period contribute to the design of the product and the success or failure of the product, given various technological innovations
Essential Question: How do advertising and marketing effect the success/demand of a technology?
Classwork: Students complete Factors that Affect Product Success or Failure worksheet

The conceptual design proposal is foremost a request seeking decision makers’ approval to
continue a design project. As such, the report must effectively communicate the credibility and
value of a design concept to supervisors, clients, prospective investors, or other decision makers.
A credible conceptual design proposal should document the extent of conceptual design efforts,
processes used in concept selection and development, key features of the proposed product
concept and their relationships to client needs and societal expectations, and evidence of product
value to potential users and investors. The quality of the report’s content and presentation will
make a statement about the design team’s professional competence, its attention to detail, and
therefore, the credibility of the proposed conceptual design

Technology Transfer
Big Idea: New technologies affect how things are invented, produced, and used.
Purpose of Lesson: Unit 1, Lesson 2 introduces the concept of technology transfer: New technologies create new processes, and a change in technology can change the process of creating a product.
